United States, Here I Come, Here I Stay
In April 1979,
I arrived in
Washington
DC, but the
position I was
promised did
not materialize. Before flying back to
Switzerland, I decided to visit a distant
relative in California.
I took the
opportunity to get a
pilot’s license, as it
was far less
expensive in the US
than in Switzerland.
I met a young guy at the flying school, and
we got married.
When I got pregnant, I read books, visited
hospitals, took classes, and decided to have
a home birth, with the assistance of
midwives. This scenario was repeated seven
