The Measure of Membership

The hit Broadway play “Rent” posed the question, “How do you measure a year? In daylights? In
sunsets? In cups of coffee?” We could ask the same question of any Adeline? How do you measure a
year? In contests? In rehearsals? In sequins? What if it were 50 years one was trying to measure?

This year Region 1 recognized 2 members who have achieved 50 years of membership in SAI!!
They are Karen Rourke (CAL) and Joan Treadwell (HOTS). How would they measure all those
years? That’s a lot of contests! A lot of rehearsals! A lot of sequins! We measured their years with
these gorgeous floral arrangements that were designed and created by Merrimack Valley A
Cappella’s newest member, Liana Buciuman. She and her friend Cora Harder, also an MVA member,
and who brought Liana to us, presented these gifts to our honorees.

Congratulations, Karen and Joan! Your continued membership and contributions you have both
made over all these years are inspirational. It’s testimony to the oft heard saying, “One joins for the
music but stays for the friendships.” There’s another measure …. the friendships. The quantity isn’t
what matters, though there are hundreds and hundreds. It’s the quality of friendships that one makes
as an Adeline that’s the most important and sustaining.
