Dr. Art Sluutsky – Reseaarch
Dr. Arthur S. Slutsky iss vice‐presideent of Researcch and has leed the tremenndous growthh in research at St.
Michael’s (CIHR fundinng has increassed from approximately $11 million in 20000 to about $14 million.
He is a puulmonary andd critical care physician whhose researchh interests innclude acute rrespiratory faailure,
non‐conventional veentilation, cclassic respiratory mecchanics, astthma pathoophysiology, lung
transplantation, and the primary rrole mechanical ventilatioon plays in thhe developmeent of subseqquent
lung injurry and multipple organ faiilure. His baasic research in mechanissms of ventillator‐inducedd lung
injury havve been transslated into luung protectivee ventilator sstrategies leaading to decreased mortality of
patients wwith Acute Reespiratory Distress Syndromme.
He has puublished over 500 peer‐revviewed publiccations and ovver 75 book cchapters. Dr. Slutsky receiived a
B.Sc. (cumm laude), 19770, Engineerinng Science; MM.Sc., Industrial Engineerinng, 1972, Univversity of Torronto,
and his MMD from McMMaster University, 1976. Dr. Slutsky wwas an instructor and assiistant professsor of
Medicine,, Harvard University, fromm 1980‐84. HHe returned to the Univerrsity of Toronnto in 1984, wwhere
he is professor of Medicine, Surgeryy, and Biomedical Engineeering.
From 19889‐2000, he wwas division ddirector, Respiratory Meddicine, University of Toronto; from 20000 to
2013, he was director, Interdepartmental Divisiion of Critical Care Mediccine, University of Torontoo. Dr.
Slutsky has won multtiple researchh awards inccluding the QQueen Elizabeth II Diamoond Jubilee MMedal
(2012), Engineering HHall of Distincction (2012), Canada’s Health Researrcher of the Year by the CIHR
(2014), annd in 2015, hee was inducteed as a Felloww of the Royall Society of Caanada.
