The Four A’s
of Appearance
ave you ever walked into a crowded room and known immediately that you had either
botched the dress code or passed an unspoken test? We’ve all been there, right?
It can be uncomfortable walking into a room full of people; however, when you know
H the message you want to send to your audience that discomfort becomes manageable.
Managing your appearance means understanding your message and using your visual image
-- clothing, grooming, and behavior -- as a communication tool. In fact, your appearance
speaks first before you even utter a word.
If you think that caring about the message in your visual image is outdated or old
fashioned, reconsider. Do not underestimate the power of clothing and overall appearance
to your success. Research continues to show that how you present yourself influences how
you are perceived. Learning how to use your appearance as a communication tool can be
critically important to achieving your goals.
Using the four A’s formula can keep your decision making simple:
APPROPRIATE – Your appearance should conform to the norms of the circumstances
and the formality of the situation. Formal to business casual for business endeavors
whether live or virtual, and relaxed and casual for the fun times.
ATTRACTIVE - Your appearance should express who you are. Well-made
clothing in flattering colours that fit you well, reflect your personality, and
work with your lifestyle.
AFFORDABLE – Your appearance isn’t subject to money. Purchase
the best quality you can afford and purchase wisely using these
shopping strategies: the 3-item rule -- where every new item must go
with at least three other items in your wardrobe; keep an eye out for
more expensive clothing during sales cycles; and make sure the
cost per wearing is worth the investment with any item you
add to your wardrobe.

to your confidence, and the confidence
that comes when you know you look
good is worth the effort every time. It feels
amazing to go about your business without
worrying about how you look, how your clothes
feel, the impression you’re making on others.
