Objectives: To evaluate the etiologic patterns of young onset ischemic stroke
in Prasat Neurlogical Institute (PNI) and correlate between risk factors and
outcomes.
Materials and Methods: Retrospective study of young onset ischemic stroke
patients (aged 15-45 years) between 2008 and 2013 was performed. Five
hundred and forty nine patients including in-patient and out-patient of PNI
were included in the study. Demographic data, risk factors, date of onset and
clinical outcomes were evaluated by reviewed medical records.
Results: Prevalence of young onset ischemic stroke in PNI was 2.4%. The
majority of the ischemic stroke patients were arterial strokes; n=543 (98.9%)
while 6 patients (1.1%) were venous stroke. With Trial of Org 10172 Acute
Stroke Treatment (TOAST) classification, the predominant stroke subtype was
small vessel occlusion-SVO (42.1%) followed by undetermined of etiology-UD
(27.0%), large artery atherosclerosis-LAA (17.8%), stroke of other determine
etiology-OD (6.9%) and cardioembolism-CE (6.2%). In the OD category, we
found the recognized causes of ischemic strokes which include vascular
dissection [n= 17; (3.1%)], Moyamoya disease [n=7; (1.3%)], venous sinus
thrombosis [n=6; (1.1%)], anti-phospholipid syndrome [n=3; (0.5%)], protein C
