Background and Objective: En plaque sphenoid wing meningioma is a rare
type of benign brain tumors. Complete surgical resection is difficult. The main
surgical approach for this of tumor is transcranial approach. Role of adjuvant
radiation therapy in treatment of meningiomas is still a subject of controversy.
The objectives of this study were to study the clinical outcome and to
evaluate the role of adjuvant radiation for the residual tumors.
Methods: A retrospective study was performed in 26 patients with en plaque
sphenoid wing meningioma, who underwent operation at Prasat Neurological
Institution between January 2008 and December 2012. Presenting symptoms,
location of tumor, surgical appraoach, postoperative outcome, adjuvant
radiation were reviewed and analyzed.
Results: Among the 26 patients, their ages ranged from 31-57 years, with a
median age of 44. The most common presenting symptoms were proptosis (26
cases [100%]), visual impairment (19 cases [73.1%]) and headache (10 cases
[38.5%]). All tumors were removed by transcranial approach alone, except 4
were operated using an additional endoscopic endonasal approach. Most
patients had residual tumor after resection especially at the cavernous and
