Objectives: A cohort study with 5 million participants showed higher incidence
of suicide-related event in patients with epilepsy, treated with antiepileptic
drugs (AEDs). Clinical trials indicated that newer AEDs increased risk of
depressive disorders for > 1% of treated patients. Almost 4% of levetiracetam
(LEV) (considered as high potential drug) treated patients experienced mood
instability as compared with < 1% of patients received other AEDs. Here we did
cross-sectional study to examine frequency of depression and features related
to depression in epileptic patients who took LEV monotherapy.
Materials and Methods: We enrolled 345 patients who were on LEV
monotherapy from 2,028 patients, followed up at our institute during 2013-
2014. Of these, 233 patients who aged 18-60 years old and have taken LEV at
250-1000 mg per day for at least 1 year are include in this analysis. We used
Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADs) for diagnosis of depression.
Factors associated with depression were then identified, using univariable and
multivariable analysis.
Results: Out of 233, 77 patients have depression based on HADs. In univariable
analysis, gender, marital status, financial tier, etiology and risk of epilepsy and
