PERSONAL PRONOUNS
Truth to Teach (Source)
Exodus 3:14 ‘God said to Moses, “I AM who I AM.”’
A pronoun takes the place of a noun; it is a substitute.
A personal pronoun takes the place of a person or thing.
Way to Work (Means)
1. Review previous lessons.
2. Read the above verse and ask which word is used for God in the last part of
the verse (I). Instead of repeating the word ‘God’ three times we can use ‘I’. It
is a substitute for a noun just as a sports person substitutes for someone else.
Read some more sentences to show the need of pronouns, e.g.
Joe rang up his mother and Joe explained to his mother that Joe would be
late.
The policemen arrested the criminal and the policemen took the criminal to
the police station where the policemen asked the criminal lots of questions.
3. Introduce the word ‘pronoun’ as a word that takes the place of a noun.
4. Ask the children to replace the names of people and things with a pronoun in
these sentences which can be read out or written on the board.
Paul likes to ride in the park. Alice is coming today.
The animal was lying still. The children were quite young.
Can Robert swim? Can this class listen?
