Science Y1 – Floating and sinking – week 2
MATERIAL AND SHAPE INFLUENCING FLOATING AND SINKING
Truth to Teach (Source) God's deity (see above).
Way to Work (Means)
1. Recall previous week's experiment. Put objects inside 2 hoops.
sinkers
floaters
What about the plasticine?
Could we make the plasticine float? Venn Diagram. Will all balls sink?
2. Group work. Predict together. Each group 6 balls – assorted sizes and
materials. Appoint a leader and a server. Do the experiment and observe.
3. Groups go to their offices to record results at the end. Keep beakers and
balls available so children can check results again. Encourage accuracy of
recording.
4. Gather information and discuss results.
If time permits ask will all trays or lids float?
Try this one altogether. Include saucepan lids?
Shape and material are both important factors in floating and sinking.
Learning for Life (Fulfilment)
For the children to understand that the material of the object and the shape of
the object play a significant part in whether or not the object floats. They will
also discover whether or not it is filled with air or some other material which
will float.
