Science Y1 – Ears to hear – week 5
LOUD / SOFT. HIGH / LOW
Truth to Teach (Source)
God has made a variety of sounds: high and low, loud and soft.
Way to Work (Means)
1. Ask the children to tell you something wonderful about how God has made
their ears.
2. Today we are going to take a closer look at musical instruments. A rubber band
across your fingers makes a small sound. (Demonstrate.) A band across a
hollow box makes a bigger sound. (Demonstrate.) The band vibrates, the
box vibrates and the air inside and around the box vibrates causing it to be
a louder sound. The makers of guitars and stringed instruments have used
this idea.
3. Wind instruments have something different. They have a bell at the end.
(Show pictures or have a brass player demonstrate with his/her instrument.)
Air is blown into the instrument and vibrates inside it.
4. Consider a drum.
5. How might we make our voice sound louder or carry further?
6. Ask children to complete the top half of the worksheet.
7. Gather and complete the bottom half of the worksheet together. Some
children may be unsure which is a high sound or a low sound, and so may
appreciate the help of others at this point.
8. Can we discover any more of God’s laws about sound? [The longer the
vibrating object, the lower the note. The looser the vibrating string, the
lower the note.]
Learning for Life (Fulfilment)
That the children appreciate how sounds can be made louder or softer, and
how changing the length of the vibrating object alters the pitch.
