Science Y1 – Floating and sinking – week 1

                                  UNDERSTANDING FLOATING

           Truth to Teach (Source)

God's sovereignty over the laws He put into the world regarding floating and sinking.

           Way to Work (Means)

               1. Read the children the story of how Elisha raised the axe-head. (2
                  Kings 6: 1-7)

Can they think of another situation where God broke the 'natural' laws of floating
and sinking? E.g. Jesus walking on the water. There are laws about floating and
sinking to be discovered, but God is not limited by them. He can break them any

               time He chooses.

               2. What does floating mean?
Using the glass aquarium test a selection of objects - get children to predict
               first. E.g.
                          - polystyrene block - clearly floats
                          - marble - clearly sinks
                          - wooden iron from Wendy house - it sinks into the water a little but it is
still floating. Children are apt to think that if it sinks into the water at
                             all that it is sinking
                          - a jam jar with a lid screwed on - it floats
with the lid off - it fills with water and sinks. Why?

           3. Group work. Children predicted results at their office first. Each group
                 was supplied with:
                          - a glass beaker from science lab - largest sort
                          - objects - see worksheet
                          - a towel

           4. Gather and discuss results.

            Learning for Life (Fulfilment)

For the children to understand what floating means.
