DRAWING CONCLUSIONS FROM OUR EXPERIMENT
-A LOOK AT SUBMARINES
Truth to Teach (Source)
Colossians 1:16 ‘All things were created by him [Jesus] and for him.’ The design
of an invention and the purpose for which it is intended are closely related.
Way to Work (Means)
1. Complete the testing of the boats.
2. Gather together what the children have learnt from their experiment, writing
conclusions on the board. Everything that is made will be tested to check that it
works properly and to see if it is suitable. It may need to be changed. cp. our
boats. e.g. Cardboard absorbs water.
Plastic is waterproof.
A tall boat needs a large base.
Cargo must be loaded into compartments.
Cargo must be evenly spread throughout the boat.
A boat must have high sides.
3. Ask the children to write down what they have learnt at the bottom of
their results sheet. Y1s choose one conclusion, while the Y2s can choose
several.
4. Gather together again. Submarines are designed to float both on the
surface and under the surface. I wonder how you make a boat sink under
the water - any ideas?
5. Demonstrate how a submarine works. I used a conical flask.
rubber bung in neck of flask
This is how it floats when empty and this needs to be shown to the children
before raising the "submarine."
The flask was then filled with water and the bung put in. It lay flat on the
bottom of the tank.
