Science Y1 – Ears to hear – week 4
OUR SENSE OF HEARING
Truth to Teach (Source)
God has created us with the capacity to hear sounds through our ears.
Way to Work (Means)
1. Sing ‘I’m so wonderfully made’ by Robert Evans (Donut Man) to focus
attention on us as the creation of God.
2. Refer to the previous lesson. How does sound travel through the air?
Were you surprised how far sound could travel? Can sound travel through a
table? Along the floor?
3. Today we are going to find out what happens when the sound wave
reaches our ears. Have a drawing of the three sections of an ear on the
board. Use different colours for the outer ear, middle ear and inner ear.
4. Outer ear is to catch sound waves and channel them into the ear canal. We
cannot move our outer ears around but some animals can. Look at pictures
of creatures with an outer ear and those without.
5. Explain the ear drum, and the three bones of the middle ear and the inner ear.
The stirrup is the smallest bone in the body. (It is only 2mm in size.) The
need for protection of delicate parts. Draw attention to the intricacy and
wonder of God’s handiwork.
6. Ask children to colour in the three different parts of the ear, making each a
different colour as on the board. At the same time take groups of children to
complete the experiment on the sheet.
Learning for Life (Fulfilment)
To help children understand and appreciate their sense of hearing, and treat
their ears with care.
