VIBRATIONS AND SOUND WAVES
Truth to Teach (Source)
God has established that any sound is caused by something vibrating back and
forth, and that sound can travel through air, solid matter or water.
Psalm. 104:24 ‘How many are Your works, O Lord! In wisdom You made them
all.’
Way to Work (Means)
1. Recap.
Last week we said it was God’s heart we become good listeners - good at
listening to Him and to others.
• What did David and his men need to listen for?
• What do sounds contain?
2. God knows all about sound. He first thought about creating a world full of
sounds. People have discovered by studying about sound that there are
some things, which are always true about sounds. We call these laws. God
allows us to discover some of His laws.
3. One of the things they have discovered is that whenever there is a sound,
something is moving back and forwards very quickly. E.g. ruler on edge of
desk, guitar string, plucking an elastic band. This movement is called a
vibration.
4. Activity
• Arrange children in groups and give each a triangle. What do you see/
feel/ hear, when the triangle is struck? Make sure everyone has a chance
to hold the triangle and feel the vibrations.
• What happens to the sound, when you touch the triangle?
5. Gather together and establish what happened when the children did this
experiment. Explain that whenever we speak our vocal chords vibrate.
6. We have looked at where the sound is coming from. Sound travels through the
air to our ears and we hear it. Whatever is vibrating makes the air around
it vibrate and so it spreads out, like ripples in a pond. We say sound travels
through the air in sound waves.
a. Make a line of children and let a nudge travel along the line.
b. The vibrations from the triangle came up through the handle to our
hands and made our bones vibrate!
