SOUNDS WE CAN HEAR
Truth to Teach (Source)
A variety of sounds (some natural and some man-made) surround us, although we
are not aware of them all the time.
Way to Work (Means)
1. Listen for sounds in the classroom. Record these on the board.
Sounds we can hear inside. Sounds we can hear outside.
Would we hear the same sounds if we listened outside?
2. Listen outside. Record those under “Sounds we can hear outside.”
3. Are these all the sounds we could hear inside? Or outside?
What a lot of sounds. What do you call it when there are no sounds to be
heard at all? SILENCE. It is very seldom silent.
4. Can you imagine what the world might have been like if God had made it a
silent world? What sounds would we not hear? E.g. no thunder, no birds
singing, animals roaring, people speaking. Gesticulate to a child to
communicate a message. Experience silence. There would also be no
laughing!
5. Share a book such as “Let there be sound” noting the variety of sounds of
creation. Then ask the children to bring out their noisy toys. Look and listen
to these in groups. Did God make these? These are man-made sounds.
Some sounds make us laugh. Some sounds are pleasant. Some are
unpleasant. We respond differently. Some sounds give us a message.
6. Read from Jeremiah 10:1-16. Bring out verses that God is living. He can
hear sounds and make sounds. He has given us ears to hear. He is the
Maker of all things, including sound and our ears.
7. Worksheet. Record Sounds of Creation and Man-made Sounds in pictorial
form.
Learning for Life (Fulfilment)
For the children to discover the variety of sounds around them on a normal day,
and to distinguish between those which are part of God’s creation and those
which are man-made.
