PUSHES AND PULLS
Truth to Teach (Source)
To introduce the concept of a force as either a push or a pull on something.
You need: a trolley
a ball and a bat
pictures of people exerting a force on things
squeeze and squash board-game, and dice
Playdough
straws and dried peas
Way to Work (Means)
1. Bring in the television trolley. If I want the trolley to move, I can’t say Move!”
and see it happen. God could.
How can it be moved?
Allow children to demonstrate.
2. A push or a pull is needed to start an object moving. We call this push or
pull a force. As we will find out forces are at work everywhere in our everyday
lives. God planned things this way.
3. Pick up the bat and ball.
How can we make the ball move along the ground?
What kind of force will a hitting force be? A pushing force or a pulling force?
4. Show pictures of forces being applied. Include examples where the force is
that of the wind or water as well as those applied by people. Have the
children identify whether the force is a push or a pull. We may use
different words, e.g. squeeze or squash, but it is really a push.
5. Recap. Tell me in your own words what a force is. A force is needed to get
something moving.
6. Go over the worksheet, and let children get started.
Have some children play “Squeeze and Squash”, while others attempt to push a
dried pea over a distance by blowing through a straw. Can they move the pea
over the same distance using a pulling force instead of a pushing force?
Move the children around as appropriate.
Learning for Life (Fulfilment)
The children will begin to understand the concept of a force as a push or a pull. They should
be more aware of forces in daily life and know that, even though forces are invisible,
God created them.
