Science Y1 – Energy and movement – week 3
in life. You may know that you are not allowed to run in the classroom. Then
someone comes along and says, “Let’s play chasing round the desks.” That’s

like a force in the opposite direction. What will you do? The Bible tells us to
overcome evil with good. Let the force of good be stronger in you than evil.
Say yes to what is right, and do that.

           4. Let’s think for a moment about the surface, on which the box is sitting. It’s
carpet. If it were a rug with shaggy pile, or a floor of polished wood, would I
need to give the box the same amount of push to get it moving? Or would
some surfaces be easier than others, and some harder?

Perhaps we could do an experiment to try to find out.

           5. Instead of a box of books let’s use this block of wood, with a 1kg weight on it.
The weight is just to make it heavier, otherwise it moves too easily. Instead of

a push, which is hard to measure, let’s use a pull, and with an elastic band
hooked onto the block, we can measure how far the band stretches before it
                  moves.

Now we need to decide which surfaces to test. (a polished wood surface, a
plastic table cloth and a shaggy carpet or grass work well.)

By asking a child to place a finger just in front of the block, you can stop the
block moving once it starts. Make sure the child pulling the band also stops

and holds position so that the band can be measured.

           6. Organise the class into groups working with an adult, while other children start
                  to complete their worksheet.

           7. After this experiment, gather and establish that rough or sticky surfaces will
give rise to more friction than smooth surfaces.

           Learning for Life (Fulfilment)

           1. For the children to grasp that friction acts against the desired direction of
                  movement.

           2. For the children to appreciate that movement occurs when the force acting

on an object is greater than friction.

           3. For the children to understand that smooth surfaces generate less friction
                  than rough or sticky surfaces.

           4. For the children to see the parallels between overcoming friction and
                  overcoming evil with God’s help.
