Science Y1 – Energy and movement – week 5
                                               THE BEST TOY CAR

           Truth to Teach (Source)

Proverbs 25:2 ‘It is the glory of God to conceal a matter; to search out a matter

                                 is the glory of kings.’

Investigating and understanding precede inventing means to overcome problems,
and a wise scientist seeks to do so with the help of the Spirit of Truth.

           You need: Ramp equipment

                          A balance
Toy vehicles, including two of different shapes but the same weight
A wooden block weighing the same as one of the toy vehicles and
                          possibly of a similar shape

Pictures of different types of transport

            Way to Work (Means)

           1. Remind the children that wheels help to overcome friction and make forward
                  movement easier.
Show the toy car and the wooden block (of the same weight and of similar size).
If we could come up with a way of testing these two, which vehicles do they
think would go the farthest? How could we test them? Listen to suggestions and

help the children in considering releasing vehicles down ramps. (The force of
gravity will be equal for both vehicles in this arrangement, so making the test as
fair as possible.) We used a ruler to hold the vehicles in position and then lifted
the ruler so releasing them simultaneously.) The toy vehicle will go further than

                  the wooden block.

           2. Lay aside the wooden block and pick up another toy vehicle to compare with the
first one. Will these vehicles be equally good if we released them down the
ramp or will one go further than the other? Involve the children in the
experiment. One vehicle will probably perform better than the other. Discuss.
                  Consider:

                              • The weight of the vehicle
                              • The shape
                              • Whether the wheels could move freely

                              • The material of which it is made

           3. Try testing some of the theories. You could weigh two other vehicles and see if
the heavier one performs in a way which proves the theory. You could select a
tall vehicle like a bus to test the shape theory.
