FRICTION – AN OPPOSITE FORCE
Truth to Teach (Source)
Every push or pull forward is accompanied by a force acting in the opposite
direction. For forward movement to take place, this opposite force must be
overcome.
Romans 12:21 The Bible exhorts us to ‘overcome evil with good.’
You need: a box of books
a wooden block, 1kg weight, and elastic band (see worksheet)
a ruler
Way to Work (Means)
1. Review. What are forces?
Last week we saw that the direction in which forces are applied matters. What
happened when people pushed or pulled in opposite directions? In the same
direction?
We can be drawn or pulled God’s way or in the wrong direction. The
direction of our lives matters.
2. What you may not know is that every time you push something in a certain
direction, a force in the opposite direction is working to slow it down and
cause it to stop.
Use the box of books to demonstrate and illustrate.
I am pushing, but it is like there is another force acting where the base of the
box is in contact with the carpet, and this force is working against me.
Without it the box would keep moving across the floor! This rubbing force is
called friction. It works in an opposite direction. Illustrate this on the board.
(See above.)
3. For movement to take place I have to give the box a push which is big enough
to overcome friction and get it moving in the direction I want. It’s a bit like that
