Science Y1 – Energy and movement – week 2
DIRECTION MATTERS
Truth to Teach (Source)
Just as forces act externally on objects to make them move, so too the Holy
Spirit acts in us both to impel us and to draw us on in the ways we should go.
Learning for Life (Fulfilment)
1. For the children to appreciate that God moves us on by applying
‘force’ within us.
2. For the children to realise that force must be applied in the direction in
which movement is to take place.
You need: a trolley
a bat and a ball
Way to Work (Means)
1. Review previous lesson. Forces are at work everywhere in our lives.
2. In us God’s Spirit can give us a little push or a little pull to get us moving in
what is good and right.
• Pull – come and pray to me
• Push – go and speak to that person
This is not a force on the outside. God works inside us.
3. These are obviously pushes or pulls in the right direction. But we may find
ourselves pulled in the wrong direction. Once Eve saw that the forbidden fruit
was pleasing to the eye and good for food, she was pulled more and more in
the wrong direction.
* The story “Because I love you” by Max Lucado is relevant here as it very graphically
describes the pull in the wrong direction. If possible share it prior to the lesson.
4. Refer to pea experiment. Draw a pea sitting on the carpet. If we want the
pea to go to the right, where do we apply the force? Where do we blow
from? (From the left, in the same direction.)
