PARTS AND WHOLES – SYLLABLES 2
Truth to Teach (Source)
To divide words with two consonants, breaking between the consonants.
Breaking words into smaller parts can help in reading.
Way to Work (Means)
1. Review the previous lesson.
2. Have lots of different words on the board for the children to sound out in
syllables. Remind them of the importance of breaking words down into
syllables to help them in reading new vocabulary.
3. Write several words with two consonants in the middle, e.g. banner, luggage.
Ask the children where they would break these words. Explain that they are
broken up between the consonants, e.g. ban-ner, lug-gage.
4. Give the children a timed quiz to work in pairs to find as many two syllable
words as they can. The words may or may not have double consonants.
5. Gather back to share, encouraging the other children to keep alert to hear any
words which do not have two syllables.
6. Let the children complete the worksheet or else draw a table in their books to
collect one, two, three, four and five syllable words from books.
Learning for Life (Fulfilment)
