            Way to Work (Means)

                1. Review Y3 teaching on speech marks.

                2. Write sentences on the board for the children to add speech marks, e.g.

The teacher whispered, “Come over here.”

“Stay where you are!” shouted dad.

“How are you?” asked the visitor.

Remind the children that question marks, full stops and exclamation marks go

                    inside the speech marks.

                3. Read the first part of the parable of the Good Samaritan from the New
International Version of the Bible, Luke 10:25, where it says:-

“Teacher,” he asked, “what must I do to inherit eternal life?”

Ask the children to comment on the punctuation in this sentence (The
speaker’s name splits the sentence so two sets of speech marks are required.)

                4. Give lots more examples of sentences split by the speaker’s name. Share
some with two separate sentences with the speaker’s name in the middle, e.g.
