APOSTROPHES 2
Truth to Teach (Source)
Proverbs 3:1 ‘My son, forget not my law…’
Good teaching should be remembered as it equips people for life.
Apostrophes are used to indicate where letters are missing in words.
Apostrophes are used to indicate single and plural ownership.
Way to Work (Means)
1. Review previous lessons.
2. Let the children go around the room with rough books to shorten words using
an apostrophe (see separate sheet).
3. Gather back to share results.
4. Remind the children of the importance of remembering good teaching which
will equip them for life. Read the above verse and explain that, although this
refers to spiritual teaching, there is also a need to remember other teaching
which will be beneficial in the future.
Remind the children of the teaching in the Autumn Term, Lesson 11 when they
used the apostrophe to show that something belonged to someone or
something. Give some examples: -
The book belonged to Jack - Jack’s book
The fur on the cat - the cat’s fur
The eggs laid by the hen - the hen’s eggs
5. Explain that sometimes an object or objects belong to more than one person or
thing. The apostrophe is then put in a different place. Give lots more examples.
E.g. The coats belonging to the boys - the boys’ coats
The shoes belonging to the girls - the girls’ shoes
