b) Christopher Columbus found the Bahamas, Jamaica and Cuba for the
Spanish in 1492. He thought he had reached India instead of America
so he called them the West Indies.

               c) John and Sebastian Cabot tried to find the north-west passage travelling NW
from England to the ‘Indies’ (China and Asia). They explored Newfoundland and
discovered Hudson Bay but no NW passage.

               d) Sir Francis Drake whose family ended up living on a boat in the Medway, in Kent
went to sea when he was about ten. In 1571 Drake sailed to the Caribbean and
                       mapped the coastline around Panama.

Drake sailed around the world between 1577 and 1580 for which Queen
Elizabeth knighted him. The Spanish called Sir Francis Drake a pirate because
he attacked their ships to steal gold. The Spanish Armada in 1588 was sent

by Philip 11 of Spain to attack England. Drake was one of the commanders who
                       drove off the Spanish Armada.

                e) Sir Walter Raleigh was born into a noble family. He fought in Ireland but he
became proud, boastful and unpopular. He claimed land in North America for

England. In 1595 Raleigh explored South America looking for El Dorado but
found Guyana instead. He was a favourite of Queen Elizabeth until he was
found to have married one of her ladies-in-waiting without her knowledge. He

was then imprisoned in the Tower of London.

            6. The children may like to write a story about being an explorer on a Tudor ship and
imagining that they had found a new land. They could describe conditions on board

the boat. Other children may like to write it as a short play which could be acted out.
Others may like to write a newspaper article reporting a journey of discovery.
