The design of ships improved in Tudor times so longer voyages could be attempted.
Way to Work (Means)
1. Review the previous lessons to give an overall sense of how Britain changed during
the Tudor period.
2. Show a picture of the Golden Hind ship (Sir Francis Drake’s galleon) or the Mary Rose
(King Henry V111’s warship).
3. Explain that some Tudors were motivated to explore the world to spread Christianity
whilst others wanted to discover more lands to trade with. The Christians wanted to
reach new lands before the Arabs who were Muslims.
Explorers returned from Asia and North America with spices, tobacco, silks, tomatoes,
potatoes and pineapples and turkeys.
4. Talk about life on board the ships:-
Sailors had a terrible time sleeping on deck.
Eventually hammocks were used.
Sailors had one hot meal a day.
Food was salted beef and fish, bread, biscuits and cheese.
Often maggots and rats got in the food and water went stale.
Many sailors died of scurvy through lack of vitamins in their diet.
Below deck there were ropes, sails, firewood to cook with, food and drink.
The crew numbered about thirty.
Sailors seldom washed on board so got covered in lice.
They soon caught diseases.
Crews were divided into two ‘watches’ and took it in turns to work for four hours
then rest for four hours.
They used compasses and other simple instruments to find their way.
They mended sails, kept watch for enemies, land and other dangers.
Compare travel for missionaries today.
5. Use a world map to talk about:-
a) Vasco da Gama rounded the tip of southern Africa and crossed the Indian
Ocean for the Portuguese in 1495.
