THE ENGLISH REFORMATION

        Truth to Teach (Source)

Colossians 1:18 ‘And he (Christ) is head of the body, the church…’

Psalm 45:7 ‘You love righteousness and hate wickedness…’

John 15:13 ‘Greater love has no-one than this, that he lay down his life for his
                       friends.’

 Jesus is the Head of the Church.

 God is just and hates unrighteousness and injustice.

 Through the centuries martyrs have lost their lives for their faith.

        Way to Work (Means)

             1. Review previous lessons.

             2. Talk about Henry V111 and the first of his six wives. Review what the children found
out about her in the last lesson. Explain that she had four sons but none survived
childhood so, as Henry wanted a son to succeed him, he tried to divorce her. The

Pope refused to grant permission so Henry made a break with Rome which had an
                 effect across Europe.

The period was called the ‘Reformation’ because people tried to reform the Catholic

Church. When this failed new Protestant (protesting) churches were founded. They
wanted simpler worship. Henry believed in Catholic ways of worship but would not
obey the Pope. Henry set up the new Church of England and made himself the head
of it. Discuss the above verse about Jesus being the Head of the Church.

Thomas Cranmer was an archbishop in Henry’s new church ad he granted Henry his
divorce. Henry wanted more wealth for his wars so he started to close monasteries
and take the money for himself. Thomas Cromwell was Henry’s chief minister and he

was a Protestant. Cromwell helped to close down monasteries until the king believed
rumours about him and had Cromwell executed. The monks had done much good work
in England which was the poorer for the closure of the monasteries.
