            3. Talk about Shakespeare (1564-1616) being born In Stratford-upon-Avon in

Warwickshire. He was an outstanding playwright and poet. He married Anne Hathaway
in 1582 and they had three children.

Shakespeare travelled to London to work as an actor at such theatres as The Globe

which was a round building with no roof over most of it but where there was plenty of
light. Tudors paid a penny to stand on the floor and two pennies for a seat. Actors
wore Tudor clothes whatever the play. Women were not allowed to act so boys
played women’s parts. Props and scenery were very simple.

Thanks to the invention of the printing press, people could read printed books for the
first time in the Tudor period.

Today there is a theatre in Stratford where Shakespeare’s plays are performed.

            4. Discuss the above verses and give examples of gifts seen in the children which God
may use later to influence others.

            5. Famous musicians included Thomas Byrd, Thomas Tallis and Henry V111 himself who
wrote ‘Greensleeves’. Popular ballads were often played on the bagpipes, viols and
                recorders.

            6. Artists experimented with oils and new techniques in portrait painting. If Queen
Elizabeth 1 did not like a portrait of her it was destroyed.

            7. Write the word ‘Renaissance’ on the board and ask the children if they know anything

about it. It means ‘rebirth’. Artists and scientists had begun looking at the ideas of
Greeks and Romans who had lived over a thousand years before them.

Henry V11 welcomed people from France and Italy to share ideas and artwork.

            8. Let the children suggest ways in which the Tudors have affected our lives today.
They may discuss this in groups or draw mind-maps to record the information. They
may need to refer to their files to remind them of the work covered.

 Tudor exploration taught geographers more about the world so further
                        exploration was possible.
 England had a powerful navy and was beginning to build trading empire world-

                        wide.
