Y6 Autumn Term Part 1. CW Lesson 2
ACTIVE AND PASSIVE VERBS 1
Truth to Teach (Source)
Acts 17:28 ‘For in him we live and move and have our being.’
Review teaching on the tenses of verbs.
Some verbs are active and some are passive.
Active verbs describe what someone or something does.
Passive verbs describe what is done to someone or something.
Changing active verbs to passive verbs and vice versa.
Way to Work (Means)
1. Review the first lesson.
2. Remind the children of the different tenses of a verb – past, present, future.
Talk about Jesus being the same yesterday, today and forever as in Hebrews
13:8.
3. Ask the children to explain the difference between active and passive verbs.
This could be done through two short dramas with one person being operated
on and a person commentating on the operation speaking in the third person,
e.g. He is now sterilising the instruments… The second drama would show the
surgeon doing the operation and speaking in the first person, “I am now
sterilising the instruments…”
Compare active and passive verbs by reading some sentences containing
one or the other. Let the children put up their hand if it is active but keep their
hands down if it is passive.
E.g. Jason caught the bus.
The photographs were taken by Tim.
Suzanne finished her homework.
The house was painted by the volunteers.
