The mats were moved and the winning run came to an end for Rochford and East Han-
ningfield in the Semi Finals going down 4:9 to Stowmarket and 4:8 to Island respectively. 5
The mat for the Final was laid on the diagonal and each of the first five ends were very
tight with only one shot being scored on each, but Stowmarket, leading 4:1 then put in what
proved to be the winning end by scoring four. Island responded by winning the last two ends
with three shots on each, but just failed to force a tie break, losing 7:8.
So ended an excellent day’s bowling. Congratulations to the Stowmarket Town team and
to Steve Killington for organising such a successful competition. Thanks to John Hurst for being
Umpire for the day and also to those behind the scenes, in the kitchen, supplying bacon rolls,
tea and coffee namely, Paul Cairns, Lesley and Peter Fautley and others, which was appreciated
very much by all the bowlers.

Secretary Retires
It is the end of an era for the Herefordshire SMBA with
the retirement from the post of County Secretary of Sue
Stannard, who has served in the post for the 20 years
since the association was formed following its de-
merger from joint county status with Gloucestershire.
Over that time Sue, a member of Fownhope
SMBC, has not only served as Secretary and Member-
ship Secretary, a role she has agreed to retain for an-
other year to ease the transition, but has provided wise
Ian Park, Herefordshire counsel to a succession of HSMBA Chairmen, drawing

Secretary Sue Stannard
Secretary Sue Stannard petitions for many years and has been the leading fig-
ure in the continuing success of the annual Macmillan
Cancer Support charity fours event which has raised well in excess of £30,000 over its 25-year
life. Alongside this Sue has had considerable bowling success for club and county as a multiple
county champion, representing Herefordshire for many years in the ICC and at several National
Championships in different disciplines.
In 2017 Sue’s achievements and contributions to the sport were recognised by the award
of a Commendation for Services to Sport in the annual Herefordshire Sports Awards and she
was this year awarded an Achievement Award by the HSMBA in recognition of her unmatched
services to the association. Sue will be hugely missed when she finally steps down from the
county committee but her many friends in the sport won’t begrudge her the opportunity to spend
more time bowling, with her family and pursuing her other interests.
ED - all sports have long serving people who do good work and long servers who don’t. It
is great to see the workers being appreciated for all their efforts, as Norfolk have also done and
publicized. Without such people our sport would be a much poorer place!
