ABOUT SHORT MAT BOWLS
ABOUT SHORT MAT BOWLS
The Cheshire Villages Indoor Bowls Tournament, apart from
not mentioning Short Mat, is “what it says on the tin”, a tour-
nament between village halls and clubs throughout Cheshire.
We have Farndon on the Welsh border and Chorley, a small
village without church, pub or chip-shop, not too far from the
Derbyshire border. I think that you will see that there is bound
to be a communications problem.
The teams are grouped on a geographical basis to avoid long winter night journeys.
The results are posted to the match secretary and progress of teams is disseminated from
time to time, through the season, by post. I think that many would describe the set-up as old
fashioned, to say the least. Something had to be done!
Two years ago, Rudheath offered to include the Cheshire Vil-
lages scores on their club web site. With exchanges of e-mails this
worked reasonably well that when the facility was ended at the be-
ginning of this season, we were at a bit of a loss.
I looked at creating our own web site with some trepidation,
not having done anything like it before. I then found League Re-
public. A site that hosts leagues for all manner of amateur sport –
football, darts etc.
I was tempted to investigate further by the ‘create’ button but got a little confused in
creating the four divisions that we needed. It was lunchtime, so I left it for a short while. On
returning to the keyboard, I was amazed that it had all been sorted and we were up and run-
ning. Someone in the backroom had picked up my problem and kindly set us up.
Now, as soon as I receive a result, it goes into our “groups” and is available for our
bowlers to compare results instantly. Notices and photographs can be placed in Albums. It
fulfils our needs admirably. If you feel the need for a short mat league website, I can thor-
oughly recommend League Republic.com.
If you wish to see what we have done. Go to their home page; enter Cheshire Villages
in the search box. The next page WORTHING BOWLS CENTRE
WORTHING BOWLS CENTRE
asks for three letters from the team
name but Cheshire Villages I.B.T.
appears in the very bottom, left FOR FOR ALL
hand corner. A click on that and CARPETS & OTHER
you are there. HANDLING BOWLING
The only drawback is that UNITS ONLY ITEMS
there are a few adverts around the FREEPHONE CALL
pages but you soon find that your 0800 587 01903
eyes fix on the results rather than 8802 201345
the adverts.
If you need to get your re-
sults spread around then get a
web site with League Republic. I
have no connection with the host
other than the Cheshire Villages
web site.
