TOURNAMENT
This very popular South Devon Hotel,
now in its 23 year of Short Mat Compe-
titions once again saw a full house of 80
bowlers.
The opening evening started with a So-
cial “get to know everyone” Bowls Drive
with players all mixed with different play-
ing parcener’s. In the end Rene Mor-
gan, Joan Sansom, John Downs &
Carol Robbins emerged as the winners.
Drive Winners Rene Morgan, Joan Sansom, The second event to be completed was
John Downs & Carol Robbins the 2-bowl singles tournament. At the
quarter final stage Tessa Shere beat John Lawes 8 - 3. Anthea Bell was coasting against Eddie
Ahier but in the end scraped through 8 - 7. Previous win-
ner Kevin Howarth romped home 9-2 against Ronald Tip-
per with ends still to play. Completing the round Richard
Williams needed a last end single to edge past John
Shere 7-6. In the Semi-finals, Richard went on to beat
Kevin Howarth 8 - 4. Also making the final, Anthea Bell
beat Tessa Shere 9-3.
In the final, Richard Williams took control and led 6 - 0
after four ends. Not to be outdone, Anthea Bell fought back
and took the next five ends to level the final 6 all going into
the last end. In mounting tension, it was Richard who
scored a two on the last end to win 8-6.
In the Triples, Richard was once again doing well with
partners Barrie Goodchild & Richard Kitchener the beat
Vionne Thornhill Diane & Bert Butterfield 9 - 6. Trevor Singles finalist Anthea Bell
Shopland, Tessa & John Shere beat Martin Booth, Dudley and winner Richard Williams
Edgar & Doug Campbell 7 - 4. Having an easier time, Joan Sansom, Ronald & Helene Tipper
won 10 - 3 and Maria Kitchener, Brian & Ali-
son Eastgate completed the qualifiers with
an 11 - 4 victory. However, in an absolutely
cracking semi-final, they were edged out 7 -
8 after a last end two by Richard Williams,
Barrie Goodchild & Richard Kitchener. In an
even tighter low scoring match, Trevor Shop-
land, Tessa & John Shere got through 5-4
over Joan Sansom, Ronald & Helene Tipper.
Either of these semi-finals would have made
great finals but the final proved equally as
good. Richard, Barrie & Richard established
a 7 - 1 lead after just three ends but three
ends later, Trevor, Tessa & John were back
within a shot at 6 - 7.
