the closest they got as the Welsh

In the second round England were in charge all the way over Scotland and led 9 - 0 after
five ends, which three ends later became 15 - 3 and ended up as 18 - 10. The match between Ire-
land and Wales was much closer and after seven of the 12 ends it stood all-square at 7 - 7 but Ire-
land took the closing four ends to finish 11 - 7 winners.
Ireland once again had their destiny in their own hands. As with the Triples they just needed
to win their last game to take the Fours title. England on the other hand desperately needed a win
to prove their ability. However, Ireland’s Seamus McMath, Tommy Mullan, Barry Kane & skip Uel
McKeeman scored a 3 on the opening end and by end four led 9 - 0. After conceding a single, 6
shots put them in front and it was effectively all over with an eventual 16 - 7 result after a fightback
from England. Wales emphatically took second place with a 17 -7 result over Scotland.

IRELAND WINS THE TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP YET AGAIN!
IRELAND WINS THE TEAM CHAMPIONSHIP YET AGAIN!
The opening round of the team event with each country fielding four rinks was a very tough one
for England who faced Ireland who had won 22 times out of 25 on Short Mats. England’s poor re-
sult last year had left them in third place and 3rd plays 1st the following year. England needed to
come out of the blocks flying but Ireland had other ideas and by the third end of the 12 end matches
led 13 - 9 across the four games.
In the end England only won one of the four rinks and that honour went to Steve Proctor, An-
drew Beard, Ben Render & Grant Soller. At one point they led 9 - 5 after eight ends but a four to
Pauline Beattie, Mark Wilson, John Wilson & Colm McHugh brought Ireland level. However, after
a dead end England got back on track with a five and a four but conceded a four on the last end
leaving England with an 18 - 13 win.
