⇒ SCIENTIFIC NAME;Ximenia caffra
⇒ DISCRIPTION;This is a sparsely-branched
shrub or small tree. Leaves are clus-
tered on short side branches, are
dark green in colour and fold inwards
along the main vein. The plants are
dioecious. The fruits are bright red,
smooth and fleshy when ripe, and are
edible. The species can be confused
with blue sourplum, which has waxy, blue-green leaves
⇒ WHERE THEY ARE FOUND;species are fairly widespread in Botswana.
⇒ USES;The fruit is edible, and is often used to make beer. The leaf, which contains
tannin and resins, is used as a remedy for cough, fever, and wounds. The seeds
contain a oil which is used for body and hair oils.
