TIP #2: THE
IMPORTANCE OF
PLANNING AHEAD
Having a plan in place makes maintaining a consistent schedule
a lot easier, which is the ultimate key to staying fit. By having
your exercises written down on a calendar you can implement
them into your school day. Eventually, working out will become a
routine and you are more likely to see results.
4 main areas of focus when creating a
plan, also known as the FITT principe:
Frequency, Intensity, Time and Type.
1. Frequency is the number of times per
week you will exercise. It depends on your
availability and the outcome you would like
to see. Your frequency should be realistic
and align with your fitness goals.
2. Intensity is determined by the volume of
exercise you want to perform and the TIP #3:
amount of load you would like to use.
STAYING
3. Time is specific to sets, repetitions, and
rest periods.
MOTIVATED
4. Type can be muscular endurance,
strength, body building etc.
Grab a buddy! Another way to maintain consistency
and improve your motivation would be to incorporate
an exercise partner. Exercising with a partner pushes
people to perform better and do more than they
normally would on their own. Having a partner can
encourage you to work harder and push your limits.
They can also ensure that your form is correct and
that you are exercising safely.
Note: The gyms can get quite busy during the winter
term, especially with other students choosing to
exercise more as their new year’s resolution goals. To
save time for yourself and others, don’t be afraid to
work in with others. Be polite when you ask and be
receptive to others who want to join you.
Also, the time of day that you go to the gym can
determine how busy it is and the availability of
exercise equipment. Anytime after 5:00 pm is when
UW gyms are the busiest. Avoid those times to have
the best workout.
