4 Gas Condenser and Trap
Refer to figure, water vapor is condensed for separation from hydrogen and oxygen, and returned
to the electrolyte system. Gas exiting the phase separator enters the shell side of a heat exchanger,
where the temperature is lowered resulting in condensation of water vapor. The gas next enters a
condenser where moisture is collected and returned by gravity to the phase separator.

5 Hydrogen Gas Purification and Delivery
Gas exiting the condenser enters the coalescing filter and trap assembly. The coalescing filter
consists of a stainless steel housing and a layered gas filter cartridge. As the gas passes from the
inside of the cartridge to the outside, vapor carried by the gas coalesces to form water droplets on
the outside of the cartridge. The droplets then gravity drain to trap.
Valve located between the coalescing filter and trap is normally open. Valve which is connected to
the gas vent system is normally closed. Every 1 hour, valves change status for 5 seconds. the small
amount of water in the trap to exit via the vent system.
Final drying of hydrogen gas, as well as removal of trace amounts of oxygen, occurs in the two
sets of dryer vessels downstream of the coalescing filter. Each vessel contains alternating layers of
molecular sieves and de-oxo catalyst. The catalyst causes the recombination of trace oxygen with
hydrogen to form water. The water, along with moisture carried in the hydrogen is removed in the
sieve layers. The system will remove moisture to accomplish a dew point below –78℃.
