 The database contains lists of street names and places. This saves time for the user
since once the system recognizes the address or name being entered; the system will
                     automatically select it.
o This feature also prevents you from entering something that is not on the list.
For example, if you are entering a city name and the first letter is “T”, the system
would not allow you to enter “M” as the next letter, as no city name starts with
                            “TM”.
 Most navigation systems allow you to store specific destinations in the system so you
can select them more quickly. These are often called preset destinations, memory
                     points, or address book entries.
 Once you set your destination, most systems will allow you to add stops along your
route. The system will calculate the best route to each stop along your trip. These
stops are often called waypoints, trip points, or stopovers.
 Most systems allow the user to preview the trip route they have chosen before they
                     begin to travel.
 Most systems allow the user to choose areas to avoid and detour around locations
where they don’t want to travel.
 The navigation system gives verbal guidance throughout the trip, letting the user know
when to turn and in which direction. The user can adjust the volume of the voice
prompts or can turn the voice prompts off, if preferred.

 If the user drives off of the planned route, the system will automatically recalculate the
route from the vehicle’s current position.
 The system will provide the total mileage for the route and approximate travel time
                     when the route is calculated.
 Most systems allow the user to decide how to orient the map – either with “North” at
the top of the screen or with the direction that the vehicle is traveling at the top of the
                     screen.
 Along with zooming in and out of the map, the systems allow customers to scroll
across the current view to see other areas.
 The systems allow you to show icons for various POIs on the map, allowing you to find
a nearby gas station or ATM, for example.
 Some of the systems have a voice recognition feature. This allows the user to speak a
command instead of using the controls on the system itself.

               Key Points

 When assisting a customer, be sure to check the navigation owner’s manual to be aware
of which functions above pertain to the system they customer is using

              Types of Navigation Systems

 Every navigation system has a method for the user to navigate through a menu and
                     make selections from lists
 There are three basic ways in which this can be done: Page4
