Along the Way
Our Along the Way section at the back of this guidebook provides helpful listings for lodging, food &
beverage, bike shops, supplies, attractions, activities and events.
Key to listing symbols:
! = Free attraction $ = Less than $10 $$ = More than $10
* = recommended ** = excellent *** = must see!
Additionally, each listing will be followed by: Mi: ## :: Distance: #
Mi = the mile indicator at which to exit the canal trail to find the particular establishment. Miles begin in
Buffalo at 0 and run east to Albany ending at 370.
Distance = the number of miles the establishment is from the ECT.
For example a listing with the coordinates: Mi: 108 :: Distance: 3, would mean you exit the ECT at mile
108 and will cycle approx. 3 miles to reach that destination.
About The Trail
Trail Surfaces
Trail surfaces along the bike trail are either paved or crushed stone dust and are suitable for most types
of bikes, however Hybrids are ideal for the trail and its varying surfaces. For the most comfortable ride a
minimum tire width of 33mm is recommended. Tandems and trikes will find most of the trail rideable,
with a few exceptions of short distance single track. Parks & Trails NY has a great interactive map that
color codes all trail surfaces.

Riding on the Road
The Erie Canal bike trail is more than 80% off road! That
equates to over 300 miles of off-road trail riding. And, as
stated earlier, most road-riding is on safe and scenic
country roads. Road riding is referred to as “gaps” in the
trail. There are 3 longer gaps which account for almost all
of the on-road riding.
Lyons Fort Byron: ~ 25 miles (scenic country roads)
Across Syracuse: ~ 13 miles (challenging city cycling)
Utica Little Falls: ~ 20 miles (scenic country roads)
Other than these large gaps most road-riding is well under 5 miles on scenic country roads with wide
shoulders allowing for comfortable and SAFE cycling!
