Buffalo to Lockport
The most western point of the Erie Canalway Trail
is Buffalo. When starting here be sure to spend
some time exploring the city and Canalside, which
is the area’s waterfront, with restaurants and a
very impressive Naval Museum.
About 13 miles from Buffalo, Tonawanda offers
many historic sites & museums, as well as excel-
lent options for lunch and rest stops. There are
also comfort facilities and showers right along the
canal.
Many cyclists will want to include a visit to world-
renowned Niagara Falls to their adventure. Doing
so only adds about 10 miles if you are heading for
Lockport. (See recommended rides on our website
for full itinerary: www.GoBikeErie.com)
From Buffalo, it’s on to Lockport where the historic
Flight of Five (see next page) is one of the most
iconic features of the Erie Canal. Originally com-
pleted in 1849, visitors can see the original massive
wooden gates next to Locks 34 and 35, which carry
today's canal traffic up the climb of the Niagara Es-
carpment. While there, be sure to visit Canal Street,
with its many shops and attractions.
