Seneca Falls to Syracuse
From Seneca Falls you’ll cross the northern tip of Monte-
zuma Wildlife Refuge with access into the park. At the north
east corner of Montezuma, you’ll find the Richmond Aque-
duct ruins so drop the bike and enjoy the easy .3 mi walk.
Bird lovers may find the 10 extra miles for a jaunt to Monte-
zuma Audubon Center well worth the effort, especially for
frequently spotted American Bald Eagles among the many
remarkable species inhabiting this beautiful area.
The trail continues on to Syracuse encountering one awesome
canal feature after the other: Old Erie Canal Heritage Park, Jor-
dan Aqueduct Park, Nine Mile Creek Aqueduct (right), and the
historic Sims Store (an authentic canal side canteen, now a
museum), as well as many others.
At Reed-Webster Park in Camillus, the off-road trail ends at
the “Syracuse Gap”, a 13 mile section where the ECT is on road
though this busy city. However, Syracuse offers every possible
amenity, including lodging, dining, activities and supplies, as
well as the awesome Erie Canal Museum (a must!), the only
remaining Weighlock Building in the world, and home to the best artifact of the Erie Canal’s history.
Caution is strongly advised when cycling through Syracuse.
