Safe Cycling In New York State
New York Bicycling Coalition is an invaluable resource that is committed to bike safety. Their staff and
volunteers work hard to advocate for a more complete, connected road and trail system while also
providing important information, so that everyone can enjoy safe
travels of every kind.
Like most states, New York, recognizes bicycles as VEHICLES, so as
you traverse the paths and roads along the Erie Canal, be aware
of your rights and responsibilities as a "bicycle driver." As a vehicle
you are required to follow all rules of the road, including obeying all traffic signs and signals.
Additionally, New York State law requires that you:
• Wear a helmet if you are under age 14 —but NYBC recommends them for ALL riders.
• Stay in control. Keep at least one hand on the handlebars and both feet on the pedals.
• Use a bike lane if one is present unless conditions like debris, cracked pavement, parked cars,
etc. make it unsafe.
• Ride no more than two abreast. When it is safe, move to single file to allow other traffic to pass.
• Signal when turning, stopping, or slowing down - unless both hands are required to maintain
control.
• Use both a white front and red rear light if cycling after sunset or before sunrise. They are re-
quired from one half-hour after sunset to one half-hour before sunrise.
• Use one earbud when using an audio device while riding. NYBC recommends keeping both ears
open!
• Have working brakes, a seat, and a bell or other noise making device - such as a horn. Whistles
are not legal in New York.
Respectful, responsible cyclists also:
• Strive to be visible by wearing bright-colored or reflective clothing
• Ride predictably. Don’t weave around parked cars or debris - or ride in the door zone
• Look over your shoulder for oncoming traffic before turning or changing position on the road.
Make eye contact to communicate your intentions.
• Show courtesy to other road users
• Have reflectors on your bike
• Ring your bell or politely call out before passing pedestrians or other cyclists.
