The Role of Job Insecurity on Work Stress
with Religiosity Moderator

Abstract. Stress is one of the psychological reactions that can be experienced in a work
situation. Job insecurity that arised from the change of work situation potentially increase
work stress. Employee religiosity is expected to reduce the impact of the job insecurity.
This study aims to determine the role of job insecurity on the work stress moderated by
religiosity. Methods of the data retrieval were conducted through surveys using work
stress scale, job insecurity scale, and religiosity scale. The subjects of this study were 119
employees who are working in a forestry sector. Hypothesis proposed in this research is
religiosity acts as moderator in relation between job insecurity and work stress. Result of
the research indicates that religiosity was not proven have a role as moderator in relation
between job insecurity and work stress, but it significantly had a direct affect on the
work stress.

The Human Capital Journal in 2014 said that one in four workers
suffered from work stress, and 44% said that work is a source of stress. Stress
according to Lazarus & Folkman (1984) is the result of interaction between the
person with his environment where he considers the interaction itself is
endangering/threatening and exceed his ability to overcome.
The study of stress until the 1980s focused on physical and mental
health (Baba, Jamal, and Tourigny, 1998; Danna and Griffin, 1999) rather than to
the caussative factors or the process how the stress was formed. In 1980s was
begun a lot of research which discussed work stress from the organization side.
Jamal (1984) sees work stress from the point of view of an employee's reaction to
the characteristics of the work environment. Research on stress within its
development, was expanded by incorporating demographic elements such as
gender, age and ethnicity. Stress sources are viewed in situations such as demand
