Route to Market
When government close down on the way the informal settlements sell
pigs, the industry noted the difference. SAPPO should try to get as much
information as possible on the route to the market for the small-scale
                   farmer.

African Swine Fever – Eastern Cape
SAPPO took responsibility for communicating information regarding ASF
in South Africa through organised agriculture. SAPPO was also liaising
with government and conducting an awareness campaign to reassure
people that pork is still safe to eat. The information will be translated into
seven official languages such as Xhosa, English, South Sotho and Zulu.

The campaign consists of a radio and community newspaper campaign,
                   and by distributing pamphlets.

From LSM 6 and upwards, there is a shift towards digital media
consumption. For the lower LSM groups, however, media types such as
radio, free community newspapers and free information pamphlets are
the most relevant and affordable options available to SAPPO.

                   8.4 Research and Development

On-line studying and virtual classrooms are expected to become the
norm. There might be a shift on how SAPPO deals with bursaries and
                   literature studies.

                   Carcass Classification

The board requested the Research Committee to have another look at
                   the carcass classification system.

During discussions that Johann Kotzé had with SAMIC, they indicated
that it will take up to 2 years to change the system. Various steps have
to be followed to get the new classification system gazetted and the
regulations will have to be changed. SAPPO, with SAMIC’s assistance,
will facilitate the process and draft the regulation for government to sign.

In response to a question posed by Myles van Deventer, the meeting
learned that the industry would conform to the European system where
the P2 had moved to 65mm. The ‘head-off’ will be the same ‘head-off’
                   as in Europe.

David Osborne was of the opinion that the new carcass classification
system should be put on hold as things might change in the market place
