SAPPO took responsibility for reporting back to the media and to include
all organised agriculture structures on a communication network.

The awareness campaign was already being conducted on radio while
pamphlets were printed and will be distributed in various official
                  languages.

Another technical meeting, as well as the communications meeting, will
take place on Thursday, 14 May.

Government indicated that, in the event of any suspected disease, the
industry would be quarantined. SAPPO intervened and requested that
the testing process be expedited if a commercial farmer was affected.

A new proposed VPN was stopped by the NAHF. The new VPN gave
DALRRD sole discretion in the decision not to pay compensation. SAPPO
agreed to start negotiations on the new VPN as soon as possible to find
a solution, especially for commercial farmers.

Peter Mockford asked that the Executive Board members be informed of
an outbreak as soon as possible.

David Osborne raised a concern regarding the quarantine that DALRRD
might impose on commercial farmers in the event of an outbreak in the
                  vicinity of their units.

Peter Evans said that if the compartment system is used for export, and
we want to make sure that the reputation and integrity of the
compartments are maintained, it could be sold as a good system. It
could also reassure all importing countries that the right protocols were
                  being followed.

When there is a positive test while doing compartment testing, the farm
is put under quarantine, and the veterinarians have to make sure that re-
testing was done as soon as possible. Some laboratory tests give false
positives. If a false positive is not reported, they do not believe that
                  proper testing had been done.

Given the integrity of the compartment, a farm should not be prevented
                  from marketing their pigs.

If a state veterinarian makes the call to quarantine the whole area,
including commercial farmers, it is possible to lift the quarantine in
respect of such commercial farmers within 24 hours. It will not be a
blanket quarantine for weeks on end.
