                                                        ABSTRACT

Graft copolymerization is an attractive method for surface functionalization of natural
polymers and initiated by chemical methods, radiation technique, and other initiating
systems. Graft copolymerization of vinyl monomers onto polysaccharides is an efficient
method for the preparation of superabsorbents. Polysaccharides are the most abundant
natural organic materials and their hydrogels are of utmost importance for wide uses.
Polysaccharides-based hydrogels are used in diversified fields such as superabsorbent
materials, drug delivery systems, selective ion-exchangers, purification of water,
antimicrobial agents, etc. The present talk will concern to threw light on some examples
of chemically modified polysaccharides through grafting process , illustrating their
properties and their fields of applications.

Key Words: Polysaccharides, graft copolymers, hydrogels, ion exchangers, biomedical
                    applications, water treatment.
