                                          NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY

                                           POLICY AND PROCEDURES

        PART I: OVERVIEW

The National Honor Society (NHS) is a nationwide organization sponsored by the National Association of
Secondary School Principals (NASSP), which honors those students who exhibit the ideals of scholarship,
leadership, service and character. Since its inception in 1921, the National Honor Society has been regarded as
a way to promote high academic standards and as an instrument for the betterment of the individual and the
        school.

Membership in the National Honor Society is both an honor and a responsibility. Students selected for
membership are expected to continue to demonstrate the qualities of scholarship, leadership, service and
character. Only Junior/Senior level students who have a cumulative, unweighted, GPA of 3.50 or higher at the
end of the first marking period of their Junior/Senior school year meet the scholarship requirement for
membership in the National Honor Society. These students are then eligible for further consideration on the
basis of leadership, service, and character.

Scholastically eligible students are surveyed to obtain information regarding service, leadership and
participation in activities. Any student who receives said survey (“Candidate Form”) should understand that it
is not an application and that review of the information does not, in any way, guarantee selection. Only the
students submitting the Candidate Form, completed in full, and on time, will be given further consideration.
Any recommendation received from within the Overbrook High School community may only be given by a
current staff member at Overbrook High School (“OHS Staff”). Recommendations outside the Overbrook High
School community will also be accepted and reviewed. A student may include achievements and services from
their freshman year to the current date on the Candidate Form. A student must have completed four (4) service
hours prior to the Candidate Form submission date. Those hours must have been completed within the twelve
        (12) months preceding the Candidate Form submission. A detailed description of the service hours and
verification of same must be included on the Candidate Form for a student to be considered an eligible
        candidate.

The names of the students who complete the Candidate Form, in full and on time, are then confidentially
circulated to the OHS Staff to gain additional information and insight into each student's demonstration of
service, leadership and quality of character through a survey (“Faculty Evaluation Survey”). OHS Staff may fill
out the Faculty Evaluation Survey for a student enrolled in their class or a student who participates in an
extra-curricular activity or sport for which they are a coach or an advisor. OHS Staff can also fill out the
Faculty Evaluation Survey for a student who provides service to them within the capacity of their role at
Overbrook High School (e.g. classroom organization or library assistance). Any recommendation given by
OHS Staff must be based on the evaluation of a student that occurred within the previous twelve (12) months
from the date of submission of the Faculty Evaluation Survey.
