It should be made clear to both parents and students that membership in the Overbrook High School Chapter of
the National Honor Society is a privilege and not a right.
PART II: SELECTION OF MEMBERS
The constitution of the National Honor Society clearly indicates that to be granted admission a student must
demonstrate each of the following characteristics: scholarship, leadership, service and character. What follows
is a policy that summarizes the selection criteria and procedures for membership in the Overbrook High School
Chapter of the National Honor Society. The Overbrook High School Chapter will observe the Constitution of
the National Honor Society as set forth by the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP).
1. Any Junior/Senior student achieving a cumulative, unweighted, GPA of 3.50 or higher at the completion
of the first marking period of their Junior/Senior year shall be eligible to be considered for membership
in the Overbrook High School Chapter of the National Honor Society.
2. Eligible students will be notified by mail. The Candidate Form which is completed by the candidate will
be mailed to the student’s residence. The Candidate Form will also be available online. To be
considered for admission, the student must complete this form in full and submit to the current National
Honor Society Advisor by the given deadline.
3. The Candidate Form.
a. The Candidate Form will be screened for accuracy, completeness, and timeliness. Only those
students who complete the form, in full, and submit by the deadline, will be considered for
admission.
b. The Candidate Form must include specific examples and explanations of the student’s demonstration
of defined leadership roles, service hours performed, participation in school-related activities and/or
community organizations, during the time period from ninth grade through their current grade level.
There are minimum point requirements for the service and leadership portions on the Candidate
Form. If a student does not reach the minimum number of points on these sections (5 points
minimum leadership, 5 points minimum service), a student will be automatically considered
ineligible and will receive no further consideration.
c. Four (4) service hours, that must have been performed within the previous twelve (12) months of the
date of the submission of the Candidate Form, must be explained and verified. These four hours of
service are mandatory to be considered for eligibility. Any student who has not completed the four
hours of service by the date the Candidate Form is due, will be automatically considered ineligible
and will receive no further consideration.
d. The Essay portion on the Candidate Form must be completed following the directions given. If the
Essay portion is not handed in or directions are not followed regarding the minimum paragraphs for
the Essay, the Candidate Form will be considered incomplete and the student will no longer be
