There are a number of points to note about the “Hockey Stick” diagram. In the MBK original:

 It is clearly titled and restricted to the Northern Hemisphere
 The rise really kicked off in 1900 before industrialisation took hold
 It does not show any absolute temperatures only variations
 The scales above and below the zero line are different
 In Albert Arnold Gore, Jr’s version the “error margin” lines were airbrushed out
 The rising temperature line appears seamless but it is a “Mike’s Nature Trick” (see page
xx) of joining proxy data prior to 1960 with actual temperature readings later.
 This implies that 1960 proxies and actual readings aligned, but they did not, with the
former being much lower than the latter
 In the original the two inputs were coloured differently and annotated accordingly
 When the illustration is printed in black and white, as is usually the case and always in
newsprint, the different inputs are not obvious
