Bank Grows By TwoBanco de Ponce Chairman Alberto M.Paracchini has announced that the bank hasagreed to acquire two Brooklyn branches ofEast New York Savings Bank, subject to theapproval of the appropriate bankingauthorities. Applications for approval havebeen made and are presently pending.%u201cThese acquisitions will take us beyondthe Hispanic market thereby signaling ourexpansion into new areas%u2019%u2019 says Paracchini.Banco de Ponce currently has 12 full servicebranches in New York City. By the end of1906, it expects to operate at least 14 branches, with assets in excess of $500 million.The East New York branches the bank expects to acquire are at Utica Avenue and onKings Highway at Rockaway Parkway.Banco de Ponce is currently celebratingthe 40th anniversary of its New York operations. The bank first established an agencyoffice at 67 Broad Street in Manhattan%u2019sfinancial area in 1946 to serve the needs ofrecently arrived immigrants from PuertoRico. After a change in the New York Statebanking laws, the bank was able to open afull service branch in 1961 and became thefirst %u201cforeign%u201d bank to do so. Today, it hasbecome by far the largest Hispanic bank inNew York with some 52 per cent share ofthe market.Converts BakeryVestpro Corporation has purchased theformer headquarters of Ebinger%u2019s bakerychain in Flatbush and will convert the sixbuilding complex into a self-storageminiwarehouse and office facility.The property, at 2290 Bedford Avenue,was acquired from New York businessmanJack Firestone for $1.5 million. KalmonDolgin Affiliates, Inc. brokered the sale.According to Vestpro president BarryRoss Weiner, an additional $2 million will bespent on renovation and a 100,000-squarefoot facility will open in the fall as one ofVestpro%u2019s Spectrum self-storage centers.About 10,000 square feet are being setBrooklyn,--------------------------- incaside as low-cost office space for use byneighborhood business people on a monthlyno-lease basis. Following that, they arehung out to dry so the flavor of sea salt canpermeate the flesh. After six hours of drying, Uncle James %u2014 a sixth generationsmokehouse operator %u2014 hangs the fish bythe tails on wooden rails. A thin layer ofoak shavings are sprinkled on the floor, lit,and then quickly covered with an eight-inchlayer of oak sawdust. When it starts tosmoulder, the doors are closed for 12 hoursuntil the fish are ready for consumption.English and Houlihan suggest slicing thesalmon paper thin and serving it on buttered Irish brown bread, with a wedge oflemon on the side.
