DESIGN GUIDELINES
EFFECTIVELY COMMUNICATING WITH YOUR DESIGN TEAM
The following information summarizes the best practices to be incorporated into the design execution of our
large scale and complex projects, including design-build and EPC engagements. The information below makes
reference to other documents which can be found in the Architectural and Engineering Quality Plans, Design
Project Management Playbook and/or the Operations Procedures Guide. These Guidelines consolidate the best
practices into a concise format for quick reference throughout the project duration. Executing a large scale
project requires an amplified focus on the fundamentals of Design Execution and includes the following:
1 DEFINED PROJECT SCOPE
This needs to be updated as the project develops and must include an adequate programming
phase at the start of the engagement to ensure all scopes are properly addressed.
2 DEFINED BASIS OF DESIGN CRITERIA
This should be updated as the project develops and maintained as a reference document.
3 DEFINED SCOPE OF SERVICES
This needs to be updated as the project develops and maintained as a reference document.
4 DEFINED DESIGN KEY DATE SCHEDULE
This is integrated with the overall project schedule and with careful consideration to the complexities
and magnitude of the project while acknowledging the sequence of design activities executed by the
process, packaging and facilities teams. The design schedule needs to include document issuance
target dates for review, pricing, procurement, permitting and construction for each scope.
5 DEFINED ROLES + RESPONSIBILITIES
◆ Project Organization Chart that includes an overall Design
Leader and Design Integrator (for EPC projects).
◆ Communications Plan – define who has the authority to make decisions.
◆ Dedicated staff with the best available resources appropriate for the scope and complexity
of the project including Subject Matter Experts who can help drive major decisions. A larger
team with additional resources in each design discipline needs to be carefully considered.
