heed and accept mussar.” In this case,
 mussar means rebuke. (Jer. 32:33)
An infusion of morality and ethics
into the term mussar entered Judaism
in the post-biblical era. Actually, the
 first book which highlighted mussar
as a spiritual and moral journey was
written in the 11 century by R. Bahya
 th
Ibn Pakudah of Spain. The book is
called The Duties of the Heart. Pa-
kudah defined mussar as “the science
of the inner life,” and influenced many
in looking at mussar as an ethical sys-
tem of inner change, a moral guide and
a system which helps one to grow in
knowledge, to deepen one’s faith thus
 enriching one’s spiritual experiences.
It is not surprising that through
the years, the meaning of the concept
was widened. Mussar retained the bib-
 lical view advocating discipline and
correction, but it also incorporates the
 post-biblical meaning of ethics and
 morality. In modern Hebrew, there
are a few phrases in which mussar
is at the center. For example, mussar
haskel (based on Prov. 1:37), literally
 means an instructive lesson, referring
to a lesson that can be learned from ei-
ther literature or life experience. Mus-
sar klayot (based on Ps.16:7), literally,
kidneys admonition, means a state of
 contrition, regret and repentance. Baal
mussar is a person who is guided by
ethics, whereas po-re-a mussar is a
 lawbreaker, a moral offender.
